The Princess and the Warg

Princess Lucy walked once more through the great halls of her father’s, King David, castle. It was a monotonous life, every day the same as the previous; waking to be pampered by the castle servants, eating in her father’s halls with nobles and dignitaries from smaller kingdoms she had never heard of; nor did she ever wish to, her place being in her father’s house. Tonight was no different, another nameless count had come to try and win her away and marry her for her inheritance. It was not as if any of them tried to hide the fact that it was her inheritance they were after, for the most part they hardly even looked at her and when they did it was only to glance at her voluptuous bosom. Dressed in a long, pale blue formal corset which took full advantage of her large natural curves, Lucy strode confidently past the armoured guards into the feasting hall. A long narrow table sat in the middle of the hall, four wooden chairs placed in a small group near the centre of the table, two chairs on each side. To Lucy’s surprise, all the chairs were vacant, her father and today’s dignitary both not in the room. To her left Lucy spotted Russel, her father’s personal champion, waiting patiently by the corridor which led to King David’s private chambers. Tonight he wore a silver plated suit of armour, thoroughly polished and adorned with small jewels and gems of several colours, indicating to Lucy that there was someone important coming to supper; Russel did not get dressed in a ceremonious suit of armour unless he absolutely needed to. Instead of going to talk with her father’s guard, Lucy daintily walked to the table and sat down, not bothering to wait for someone to pull the chair out for her. As soon as her shapely behind hit the chair, her father raged into the room, face red with white knuckles swinging viciously by his side. Russel took step behind him, his face still impassive as ever.

“Those dunderheads, travelling past Herrick’s Forest! Didn’t they know those wolves were becoming more and more aggressive?” King David griped loudly, “Tell me Russel, did we not give explicit instructions not to take that road? Of course we did! But they’ve gone and done it anyway, and now they’re dead, food for the wolves.”

Russel stood silently as King David continued his ranting, waiting for his liege to calm down. The angry words slowed rather quickly as King David acknowledged Lucy’s presence, his craggy facial expression slowing morphing into one of embarrassment at his unsightly display in front of his daughter. It was now that Russel spoke, his words being soft, yet critical and worth the attention that David was giving.

“My lord, if I may offer you a solution?”

David nodded his head slightly, granting permission for Russel to continue.

“These wolves have been a problem for a few months now, and if you didn’t realise, I had already taken the liberty of organising a militia squad to counter attack these beasts.
